Health Anxiety (Hyperchondriasis)

It’s normal to worry about your health from time to time, but Health Anxiety (sometimes known as Hyperchondriasis) is the distressing and excessive anxiety about your health, for example being preoccupied with worries about having cancer or other serious illness.

When suffering from health anxiety people will often:

  • Constantly worry about their health – often thinking about the worst that can happen
  • Visit their GP or doctor frequently – but struggle to feel better for any length of time once reassured
  • Research symptoms on the internet or in books
  • Check their body for physical changes or symptoms
  • Misinterpret ‘normal’ or safe physical symptoms as meaning something more dangerous is happening
  • Avoid programmes or articles about health – or seek these out
  • Seek reassurance from others about health concerns
