For Professionals

Information and guidance for professionals looking to refer someone into our service.

Our Professional Referral Process

There are numerous ways you can refer someone into our service or get in touch if you are looking for further information about our service.

  • Complete our online Professional Referral Form if you want to refer someone to us.
  • Alternatively you can signpost clients to self refer on our website.
  • We also offer outreach support for professionals and can support you and your staff locally. Find out more about how we can support your offer.

All referrals into our service will be looked at within 48 hours. If we think the referral is appropriate, we will contact the client and book them in for a suitability assessment. However, if we feel a different service would be more suitable for their needs we will contact the professional who made the referral to advise.

Suitability Criteria

Clients must be over the age of 16 and registered with a Wakefield District GP. As a primary care talking therapies service we are not able to provide an emergency response and therefore any referrals to support with unstable risk or safeguarding concerns should be referred to the appropriate agencies. Clients should be aware of the requirement to engage in therapeutic intervention for the following:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Poor Sleep
  • Anxiety Disorders: (Specific Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, OCD and BDD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Health Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic (with or without Agoraphobia)
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Long Term Physical Health Conditions and pain
  • Medically Unexplained Symptoms and Somatoform conditions
  • Complex grief

Unsuitable referrals

  • Under 16
  • Imminent or unstable risk of harm to self or others
  • Severe impact on functioning (i.e. unable to attend and commit to regular talking therapy appointments, severe self neglect)
  • Severe and enduring mental illness such as Psychosis, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Eating disorders
  • Support for Personality disorders and/or emotional regulation
  • Primary problem of substance, alcohol or other addictions
  • Significant learning disabilities or cognitive impairment
  • Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) – including multiple childhood trauma or prolonged multiple trauma
  • Behavioural problems such as impulse control issues and aggression
  • Those who need to be primarily referred or have an active referral for forensic or neuropsychological assessment

We are happy to discuss any referrals. Whilst we aim to minimise repeated assessments for clients with differing services, we can offer signposting advice or referral on when an individual’s needs may be more appropriately met by other service.

How can we support your offer?

We would be happy to come out to your service to deliver information sessions, Wellbeing Workshops or assessment days specifically for your staff, service users or any carers that you work with. This could be held within your setting or offices, or online via Teams - we would be happy to talk with you about a set up that best suits the needs of your service.

We would also be happy to provide you with promotional materials to hand out or add you to our email mailing lists.

Please email [email protected]  if you would like us to send you any materials or discuss further how we can help your service.

Spend time with us

We regularly run “Information Sessions for Professionals”, online or face to face, to help professionals learn more about what we offer and take away some tips on holding conversations with the public about their mental health and the benefits of talking therapies.

The purpose of these sessions will be to provide you with an overview of our service including what’s on offer, who we work with, updates on the service, details of new treatment offers and to take any recommendations for events or to allow professionals to ask questions.

Please use this as a great opportunity for any new staff to be included as part of any induction process, or as a refresher for staff wanting to know more about what support is available through NHS Talking Therapies.

Please call us on 01924 234 860 or email [email protected] for further details and to find out when our next session is.
